Return Of Godzilla by Fourgreen Return Of Godzilla by Fourgreen
The movie we've first knew as "Godzilla 1985" was originally quite different (and possibly more exciting?) in it's early conception. A large portion of the plot concerned the infamous monster Bagan, who was a shape-shifting creature who plagues Japan and faces Godzilla in it's combined "totem pole" form, incorporating elements of a dragon, monsterous simian, and fish creature (3 forms it took individually prior).

Taking some visual cues from the final product, I inserted Godzilla locked in battle with Bagan to give a possible idea how this may have looked. Suit actor Hurricane Ryu had done a series of drawings depicting several unmade kaiju (most which I have used as a basis for my past illustrations), and that is where this image of Bagan draws inspiration from...but with more of a man-in-suit feel.

first off, Beautiful illustration! I love the style, great details. and amazing atmosphere.

My main dislike of the picture is Bagan, but this isn't your fault. it's the design in general. I really think it's the ugliest design ever conceived, and happy it didn't get used.

to me it makes Minya look intimidating, the totem style does not work in it's favor, if anything it makes it look silly and retarded. it's little wonder why the Super Godzilla final design is preferred.

Again this was a critique against the monster design from toho, not the illustration itself, which again is beautifully done.

Thanks for the comments! I agree with you on how ridiculous this kaiju looks...but at the same time, it also appeals to my "What if Toho just didnt stop after Terror of Mechagodzilla"? How bizarre would their opponents get?" mentality. But yes, would have been a very poor direction to lead the Heisei series in.

Yeah, there we go, as friggin crazy as I imagined. I would have loved to see them try and be all scientific about Bagan

If you do eventually do the original GMK, you should also take cue from the final film like how you did this.

Anyway I think if this really came to be, it would've been a LOT more Showa-esque and less serious in tone.

I've never been a fan of the totem pole monster version of Bagan, too goofy looking, but ya did a good job on its design here, even if I still think it would fit in better with a Super Sentai or Metal Hero setting than Godzilla.

LOVE the job ya did on Goji85, one of my favorite designs, as well as the Super X, the buildings, and the lasers (those were lasers rather than masers right? lol)

Thanks, Warriorking4ever!

I guess, since they didn't have that "lightning bolt" look to them.

Despite Bagan's goofiness, I wonder if that movie would have performed better with an opponent for Godzilla to fight or not?

Meh, I actually like the fact that Goji85 is able to carry itself without an opponent. I doubt another Goji film could do the same, but 85 pulled it off...Plus, I like the fight with the Super X! :D

The part where he falls into the volcano at the end and gives that heartbreaking scream always gets to me...Sniffles...He just wanted to smash your city! Monsters! XD

Atomic breath to the crotch, ouch! Godzilla pulled a King Ghidorah.

Ignoring that statement, this is very cool piece, with a awesome atmospheric feel, and those buildings look very nice.

As much flank as Bagan has been receiving from Godzilla elitests in the past few years, I'd definitely prefer that Bagan over the original draft for him. Still, this is a great picture, and it's cool to see a monster in action against '84 Godzilla! Well done!

I wouldn't mind seeing your taking Godzilla vs. Ghost Godzilla, since it also was to include Junior and Anguirus.

Try typing in "heisei anguirus" on Google Images and the pictures should appear. Alternatively, you can find them at Rodan's Roost/Kaijuphile in the Concept Art section in "Unused Kaiju"

Nice! It's everything I imagined it to be like! And you captured the look of The Return of Godzilla with such a big and detailed skyline. The design, the colors, the lighting is all like The Return of Godzilla! You even darkened Bagan's pallet to match the dark color scheme and wide cinematography of the movie.

I dunno what happened after vs Biollante, but the Heisei films had this weird TV MOVIE look that just did not make them age as nice as The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs Biollante. Those two actually looked like movies

THIS^.

The Heisei movies, IMO, have NOT aged well. I can only watch TROG, Biollante, and oddly enough Space Godzilla (but I'll get into that if I ever do a Space G piece). I think this mainly has to do with the time in which they spent on crafting these particular 2 movies. G '84 was the first in almost 10 years. Special Effects were more sophisticated (despite still looking shoddy by our standards). There was no rush to get one out year after year. In fact, because Biollante was in development for so long, I believe that the design crew for that film also had a fresh approach to how things can look more visceral, with details of the 2 monsters done really well.

Once Toho started churning out a film annually, the time spent on getting these details was dropped (I personally believe), as none of the monsters afterwards look as convincingly "alive", but more puppet-ish or rubber suited.

SO as much as I love pretty much all Godzilla films (Tristar withstanding), the Heisei gets the least visits from me these days.

Really? I am a huge fan of Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II (best story in the entire Godzilla franchise IMO) and I felt that neither Rodan or Godzilla looked like puppets or rubber suits. Although I liked SpaceGodzilla, the motivation of the space kaiju was a mystery to me...until I found someone's interpretation of the character...as a female.
Here's the interpretation: gojinya38.deviantart.com/art/G…

Godzilla 1984 was still a great movie, but would have been much better had they went with this idea instead. Then again budgeting reasons at the time probably prevented that from happening.
