Kamoebas by Fourgreen Kamoebas by Fourgreen
#2 in my favorite Kaiju designs, comes the jungle turtle from "Space Ameoba" (a.k.a. "Yog Monster from Space").

As with most underused monsters, Kamoebas or Kameba, stirs interest. His bizarre accordion neck attack, strange lumpy shell, and creepy hissing roar, make for a creature distinct from the "other rival kaiju turtle". But hey, I'm a sucker for turtles, so what can you do?

For years, I've read about 'Space Ameoba" since first playing the NES Godzilla game and fighting Gezora. Its a movie that had eluded me for more than a decade until it was released on DVD a few years back. Up until then, i heard about how "lousy" the movie was. But I was surprised how much I liked. It was anothe non-Godzilla Toho flick, and it's monsters had crossover appeal for a shared universe. The biggest embellishment, is Kamoebas' cameo in Tokyo S.O.S.

Kamoebas is a kaiju that, while I only know about him from "Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S." (#8 on my Top 15 Godzilla Movies list), I find to have an interesting design much like you (#12 on my Top 25 Kaiju Designs from Toho) and I even have a story based on "Godzilla and his Amazing Friends" involving some of my original kaiju alongside kaiju from "Pacific Rim" and the Gamera series. Kamoebas in my story is actually a major player, being the "Anguirus" of the three main kaiju.

Wow, man, this is pretty awesome. From the sense of scales to the overall atmosphere, it works on so many level. Also, Kamoebas is ones of those underappreciated kaiju.

Thanks! I agree, I wish the "Yog" Monsters got more exposure. They were like the lost kaiju for years when I was growing up. I never heard of these guys until I hit my teens!

Welcome, and I agree. In fact, I never seen the movie until I was a young adult.

This looks really amazing. And dare I say...better than the monster truly deserves lol. Oh...I can hear the booes and hisses from the Godzilla fans right now. He is after all the major favorite from the trio of monsters. And yet...he is sort of my least favorite. Gezora is goofy, but at least he was something out of the ordinary from Toho. He gets some sweet human kills, and gets to just tear up an entire village. And that theme...what beautiful music.

Yet for as neat as he was...Ganium is better. His theme is very haunting. So much bass and build up. His suit was amazing too. The detail work in the hairy mandible area was fantastic. They also did a pretty good job at hiding the actors legs in that thing too. Its sort of funny to see the legs on the toy though lol.

Kamoebas is cool....don't get me wrong. He is a really solid design and I love that he hisses. Finally we don't get a roaring monster. I think the fact that hurts him, is because he is such a really basic soild design. Its your basic snapper. There is nothing really that memorable about it. He has a really cool shell and extends his neck. That is all. But with other monsters like Gezora and the crab...you get so much more. The squid had that neat frost like grip and tons of arms. His shambling walk on land, while pretty goofy, is burned in your mind. For better or worse lol. Least not us forget those pothead eyes. So big and staggered. Its hard to not want to squeeze him.

The crab is the same way...but for totally different reasons. Those whirling eye stocks are so muppet like. Normally that would be a turn off...but when you pair it with the massive amount of detail on his body...boy you got a monster. He dances around like he is on drugs and loves to spit at people. Such an odd trait too, but there are severely Ultraman monsters that do that some thing.

Ok, I seem to have gone way off on a tangent lol. Lets get back on track. The illustration looks as good as the rest man. I love that you included people fleeing from him. Reminds me of the first scene you see of him in the film. Even at his size I do not imagine that it would be that hard. He really is slow. But it is really nice. Good colors, good background. Just an overall good composition.

I can see how Gezora would be more appealing, as you said, he is not the typical kaiju man-in-suit form. Ganime always seemed like a really sloppy costume, but I always remember his eye getting shot out! lol.

All 3 monsters harken back to the giant mutant animal trend that was inching away to the more abstract kaiju of that time.

I probably do something that features all 3 again eventually, but I just need a good idea...

Mmmph....a good idea for it. Maybe Frankenstein and the Gargantua twins fighting them? Or maybe pick some critters from a none Godzilla series. Johnny Sokko is on DVD. There are a ton of weird stuff there haha. Same goes for Iron King. Seriously, if you like Showa stuff...get that
series. Its like 8 bucks for the whole thing.

Love Johnny Sokko.

Even a Pacific Rim vs Space Ameoba would be fun...

Awesome work. Space Ameoba is an interesting film and it reminded me of Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster. Toho should use more of the kaiju in Space Ameoba.

One of the many reasons why I'm not a fan of Tokyo SOS is because of Kamoebas's lack of screening. I REALLY wanted to see his and Godzilla's fight.

That would have made that whole movie so much more than an elaborate re-tread. I actually wish they carried on with the Kiriyu saga, as indicated in one of the books associated with the film. It outlined which kaiju existed in that particular Godzilla world, and it was all Showa greatness...

EXACTLY, So many Showa universes are connected to the Kiryu films, and out of all of them, Toho goes with the Cash-grabber Mothra and turns the whole movie into a "Millennium"-ized and even more illogical Godzilla vs. The Thing rehash.

HAHHAHA. Yes! I remember hearing the premise about Tokyo SOS and thinking "Mothra again?". She just had a trilogy, an appearance in GMK and now she's back!

As a side note, its probably why Ghidorah is in the Mothra trilogy so much, being the other cash-grab kaiju.

Yeah, Tokyo S.O.S was a pretty disappointing film for me. I thought it was such a waste to have Mothra in a film once again. I'd would have rather have it be King Ghidorah (in My dream 3 way battle) against both G & MG. Toho has the problem of using safe bet monsters like Mothra. Why not give Rodan, Angy or Gigan more of a chance like they did in Final Wars. Or hell, Gezora and Kamoebas or Titanosaur.

It really is. I enjoyed it when I finally got to see it. I guess hearing about how terrible it was for years lowered my expectations to the point where I had no choice but to like it. LOL
